TeePublic Sign-up

If you are a blogger or a podcaster with a decent amount of readers or listeners and you are looking for a way to monetize it, I will explain a simple way you can do that with print-on-demand merchandise.

For my own blog, I use several free, print-on-demand (POD) services that allow me to sell related designs on t-shirts and other merch. Being a graphic designer, I'm able to create my own designs to sell. If however, you don't have any design skills, don't let that technicality stop you from selling merch.

The reason you don't need to be a designer, is because one of the POD services I use offers something that the others do not, and that is the ability to curate and sell other artists' designs in your own online store. How does this work, you wonder? Let's have a look, shall we?

When you open a free TeePublic store, you are able to upload your own designs and feature them on products in your store. If you join TeePublic's affiliate program, you're also able to add other artists' designs to your store. If someone visits your store and actually purchases a third party design, you earn an 11% royalty and the designer will earn the standard 20%. Naturally, you'd want to select designs that are relevant to your blog or podcast, to stock your store, for best sales conversions. Once your store is stocked, place a referral link to your store on your blog, or mention to your podcast listeners where they can buy merchandise, to support it. Your entire store can be filled with curated designs, without any of your own. All you need to do is brand your store by uploading a profile pic and a store banner and you are ready to start selling t-shirts, mugs, stickers, totes and more!

Here is a step by step process on how to open your own TeePublic store.
Extra vigilant (read more) »Movie Vigilantehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00563852370311352162noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4728927949917534525.post-66663472342933452282020-06-05T23:18:00.001-04:002020-06-05T23:24:07.471-04:00Weird Paul: Lit AF Music Review

If you've watched Schitt's Creek up to season 5 and beyond, then you know that Rose family matriarch, Moira Rose, stars in a low-budget horror movie called The Crows Have Eyes 3: The Crowening. There was even an episode of the show in which a trailer was shown for the fictional movie.
VHS Collection

I created this short video, partly to show off a few of my favourite VHS tapes from my modest collection. I don't have many but of what I have, a couple of them are obscure.

"You miss 100% of the tapes you don't play" - Johnny Rose

Ghostbusters is the most popular title I own on VHS and if you'll notice, my copy is still in pristine condition.

Memoirs of an Invisible Man is an underrated John Carpenter movie with Chevy Chase in the title role.

I love it when the colour of VHS tapes matched their titles, as in the case of The Hunt for Red October.

The box art for Night of the Zombies has suffered some serious sun fade

I still think Ghostbusters 2 is better than it's given credit.

I bought The Pit for $5 when my local video store was clearing out a bunch of used VHS tapes. I reviewed The Pit in this blog.

Melanie is an obscure Canadian movie that featured Burton Cummings in his first and last acting role.

Extra vigilant (read more) »Movie Vigilantehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00563852370311352162noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4728927949917534525.post-33799029871825295122020-03-30T02:36:00.000-04:002020-03-30T02:36:49.895-04:00Stuck On VHS -- A Visual History of Video Rental Stickers

Before streaming services allowed viewers to watch movies from the comfort of their living rooms, or any room for that matter, video stores were where you went to rent your entertainment. DVDs were the format of choice before video stores started going out of business, but before that, it was VHS videotapes that lined the shelves during the 80s and 90s.

Unlike DVDs, VHS tapes needed to be rewound before being returned to the store. Because of this, stickers were stuck directly onto the videocassette, reminding customers to "be kind, please rewind" or some other variation of the phrase. Sometimes another sticker would warn you that a small charge would be applied to you if you did not comply with this rule.
A little while ago, I wrote about what movies one might have expected to find at Rose Video, the fictional video store from the TV comedy series, Schitt's Creek. One such movie was the equally fictional The Crows Have Eyes 3: The Crowening.

In the previous season, Schitt's Creek had shown us glimpses of The Crowening as we witnessed Moira Rose (Catherine O'Hara) behind the scenes, shooting her part for the make-believe movie, in her role as Dr. Clara Mandrake.

This season, after the movie had been shelved, a new streaming service called Interflix acquires the rights and starts showing it on its platform. Of course, Interflix is yet another fictional creation by the Schitt's Creek team which has even gone so far as to create a social media account for it on Tweeters. The account has already gained several disciples. But the best part about it all is that they went the extra mile (as the crow flies) and created a full movie trailer for The Crows Have Eyes 3.

Super Inconvenience Mart

There's only three days left in this Kickstarter campaign that is raising funds to create a video game featuring many B-movie characters, including Torgo and The Master from Manos: The Hands of Fate.

This is not the first time a video game features Manos characters. Also visible in the campaign's page are Trumpy from The Pod People and the cast of Eegah!

If you want to receive any of the campaign's rewards, be sure to donate to the campaign before it ends. Schitt's Creek is one of my favourite TV shows so I was sad to learn that its 6th season would be the final one, in 2020. It isn't because it was cancelled. It's only because the show's creators decided to end it on their own terms, the way they saw fit. As much as I'd like to see a couple more seasons, I respect the decision they've made.

In case you don't know, Schitt's Creek is a comedy series that depicts the riches-to-rags story of the Rose family, whose amassed fortune has been embezzled by a crooked business manager, who also neglected to pay their taxes. As a result, the government seizes all but one of their assets and they are evicted from their mansion. The lone, worthless asset that the Roses are allowed to keep is a town called Schitt's Creek, which the family's patriarch (Johnny, played by Eugene Levy) bought for his son David (Dan Levy) years earlier, as a joke.
Marion Stokes (1929-2012) was a librarian and access television producer who began recording television programs around the clock, beginning in 1979, ending in 2012 upon her death. The recorded TV shows consisted mainly of news broadcasts from stations such as CNN, C-SPAN, CNBC, etc. She had as many as eight VCR machines recording at once, throughout her home. Each videotape had a 6 hour recording limit, so Stokes and her husband arranged their daily routines and schedules so at least one of them was around to switch the tapes when needed.

The result of this was that, after 33 years, she amassed a collection of 71,716 videotapes with a total of 840,000 hours of recorded television programs.

Wow! This makes even Weird Paul look like a slacker archivist .

She also collected newspapers, magazines and computers. All of these were stored in numerous apartments and storage units.
Almost three years ago, in my review of The Pit, I jokingly mentioned that I would watch a horror movie of The Banana Splits, since a character in that film calls the creatures "tra-la-logs", reminding me of the Tra-La-La theme song from the kids TV show. It's the same song that can be heard at the beginning and middle of the trailer.
Part 1 of this interview was published Feb. 2, 2015. I had always wanted to do a follow-up and fill in some of the gaps. To help out, I asked Jan if she could get in contact with her friend and co-star in Teenagers Battle the Thing (TBTT), Ruth Ann Mannella, who played "Linda". Jan provided a copy of the questions to Ruth Ann, who was able to provide some additional information.

In reply to Jan, Ruth Ann had this to say:

"So glad you shared this latest experience with me. The movie now seems to have a little life of its own, interesting... I would like to share some of my memories as well."

While I was at it, I decided to design a new poster for TBTT to dress up this post. It's a portrait version of the "Orange Pop" landscape version I designed a few years ago with a few alterations. Of course, I had to include the prayer stick.
Part 2: Jan Hart Interview

Some of these questions are some that were asked and answered by Jan in Part 1. I am repeating them here, this time including Ruth Ann's responses with her own memories of filming TBTT, for context.
With more and more YouTuber's channels being demonetized in recent months for unspecified reasons, many video content creators are searching for alternatives to the video platform. I've mentioned previously that DTube is a good option but now a new platform called BitTube may end up being the one that challenges YouTube for the throne.

There are several reasons why I think this might happen, which I'll explain. First though, what is BitTube and how is it different?

What is BitTube?

BitTube is a fast-growing network designed to empower video creators
and live streamers, entertaining far-reaching audiences through a
seamless user experience — ad-free and always monetized. coin.bit.tube

BitTube is a video platform similar to YouTube where contentent
creators can upload their videos and be paid for it. There are some
differences, however. Unlike YouTube, BitTube is decentralized. Also, in
addition to creators getting paid, viewers also earn currency. That
currency is called TUBE.

The 'D' is for Decentralized

I've written about this platform before but in case you haven't heard, D.Tube is an alternative to YouTube. It's decentralized and is built on the Steem blockchain. What that means is that it is censorship free with users determining how much your video earns in Steem by upvoting it or downvoting. Steem is a crypto currency.
Five years ago, I wrote about Pete Williams trying to bring back Undergrads, possibly as a movie. Undergrads was an animated show on MTV that focused on four friends as they experienced college life. MTV cancelled it into the 6th of 13 episodes.

However, it gained a loyal following in Canada when it was constantly shown on the Teletoon channel, which is how I became familiar with it. Episodes of the show were in heavy rotation and Teletoon viewers were always hopeful that the cliffhanger in episode 13 would be resolved sooner or later.

It turns out it would be much later.

Pete Williams Launches Undergrads Kickstarter

The last episode of Undergrads was produced in 2001, but fans of the show will finally get closure on the fate of the show's quirky characters. That's because Williams has secured the movie rights and has launched a Kickstarter campaign to get one made.
Snappy, Cappy Comeback!

Social media is great to interact with friends and like-minded people but it can also sometimes be a mine field of fiendish foes and terrible trolls who enjoy hurling insults at you.
That's why I decided to create this animated GIF that you can use whenever you need a snappy, Cappy comeback to deflect any insults thrown at you.

You won't be using a shield to deflect the hurtful comments, though. Nope. Instead, you will rely on your rubber ears.
Will Work For Views: The Lo-Fi Life of Weird Paul is finally slated to premiere on June 23, 2018 at the Regent Square Theatre in Pittsburgh, PA.
Paul Petroskey is a lo-fi musician who has written over 700 songs. He has also been vlogging since 1984, long before YouTube was around.

Will Work For Views was partially funded by a Kickstarter campaign, to which I happily contributed. My reward was receiving a video recording of Paul playing live in a bar in Hollywood, some of which will be shown in the movie.
I found out about Bcast Cult Podcast only a few weeks ago while browsing new uploads on DTube. As you might surmise, it's a podcast that discusses B-movies, so I was happy to have discovered it. Apparently, the show has been around for a few years and the episodes that are currently being uploaded are from its beginning. They're all new to me so I've listened to each one so far.

The episodes are hosted by Mike and Mal (aka Malaria) and feature very casual conversations about bad movies they've watched, as well as B-movie news and nerd culture.

Mal also draws really cool reproductions of the movie posters related to each episode, often in crayon or color pencils.

What Is Steepshot?

Steepshot is a website where you can post your own photos, similar to Instagram but with a few differences.

One difference is, when other members like your posts, you earn money in the form of a cryptocurrency called Steem, which can be converted into dollars. When you like a photo, you also earn Steem as a curation reward. Also, any photo uploaded to Steepshot is simultaneously posted to your Steemit blog, which makes it more visible to anyone who follows you.

Steepshot also allows users to upload their photos with a web version.

There are three ways you can upload your photos:

App Store

Google Play

If you haven't heard of this holiday it's because I just made it up, much like Frank Costanza made up Festivus on an episode of Seinfeld.

The idea came to me when I grew bored of the endless string of bloated, boring, blockbuster movies that have saturated theaters in recent years. I wanted something that celebrates the joy of watching a cheesy, B-movie no matter how bad it may be.
For the B-movie Lover in Your Life

If you're a day late and a Valentine short, you can dedicate this Valentine poem I wrote along with a classic B-movie monster I drew, to your significant other. Simply include a link to it in an email or text to them. It's a great Valentine for the B-movie lover in your life.

The monster is from the 1956 horror movie, It Conquered the World, starring Peter Graves, Lee Van Cleef, Beverly Garland, Sally Fraser and B-movie staple, Dick Miller.

It was produced and directed by Roger Corman who is arguably the king of B-movies. When you see his name in the credits, you know exactly what to expect. What I expect is a cheesy, bad movie that is also fun and entertaining and that is certainly what we get with this film.

The strange-looking alien creature hails from Venus and tries to enslave the human race, using mind control. It's hard to take an alien seriously when it looks like an overgrown vegetable but those large pincers look menacing.

Although the alien is impervious to bullets fired from all types of guns, it's weakness turns out to be fire, specifically fire directed directly into its eye via a simple blowtorch wielded by Van Cleef. If this was a Schwarzenegger film, he would have said to the dead alien, "You're fired."

Finally! A Comment System with Rewards

I'm testing out a new comments system for movievigilante.blogspot.com and it's called Finally as in "Finally, a comments system that rewards authors."

According to finallycomments.com:

Finally is an evolution of Steemcomments.js and at its core uses the Steem blockchain to provide posting and curation rewards to its users. Similar to other popular plug and play comment systems Finally requires only a single html tag while our javascript library & backend system take care of the rest.

Finally uses Steemconnect authentication to allow users to post comments and upvotes directly from anywhere Finally is embedded. Once authenticated with Finally, users will not have to log in again when visiting other sites that also use Finally.

If all goes according to plan, the comments you see on this post will be seen simultaneously on Steemit.
